Advanced Open Water Course from Cairns

One reason you’ll love the Advanced Open Water Diver course is that you and your instructor choose from many types of Adventure Dives to complete your course. You can try your hand at digital underwater photography, peak performance buoyancy, fish identification, deep diving, underwater navigation and much more.

Each Adventure Dive in the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course may provide you with credit toward the first dive of the corresponding Specialty Diver Course.

Course Duration: 2 Days
Depth: maximum depth depends on your age, but maximum depth is up to 21 metres/70ft.
Minimum Age: 12 years+
Course prerequisites: Must have completed your PADI Open Water Diver, Junior Open Water Diver, or qualifying entry-level certification.

What will I learn in the course?

The knowledge and skills you get in the Advanced Open Water Diver course vary with your interest and the adventures you have, but include:

  • Practical aspects of deep diving
  • Physiological effects of deeper scuba diving
  • How to navigate using kick-cycles, visual landmarks and time
  • More ways to use your underwater compass
  • How to better use your dive computer and Recreational Dive Planner
  • And much, much more, depending on the Adventure Dives you choose

There are two compulsory adventure dives; Deep Diver and Underwater Navigator. You can choose 3 of the following elective dives to complete your certification:

  • AWARE-Fish Identification
  • Underwater Naturalist
  • Boat Diver
  • Peak Performance Buoyancy
  • Multilevel Diver
  • Search and Recovery Diver

How long will the course take?

The Advanced Course is run over two days on EVOLUTION. You will complete some basic theory in the comfort of our air-conditioned saloons then complete 5 training dives from the selection above, and 1 fun dive to practice your newly discovered skills.

What if I've already got my Adventure Certification?

Awesome! Then there is no need to do the whole course! If you've already completed your Adventure certification, you are halfway to Advanced already. Simply enrol in the Adventure Diver Course to complete your remaining Adventure Dives. Alternatively, you can enrol in the Full Advanced Course and spend your second day doing 3 Fun dives on Evolution.

What is the difference between the Open Water Learn to Dive Course and the Advanced Diver Course?

Besides the obvious that the Advanced Dive Course is the next level above the beginner Open Water Learn to Dive Course, you may still be wondering how the Advanced Open Water Course differs from the PADI Open Water Diver Course and what new things you will learn and experience?

The Open Water Diver Course is an entry-level course into the world of Scuba Diving. It teaches you the essential knowledge and practical skills to explore the underwater world. The Advanced Open Water Diver Course is a great way to continue your scuba journey, discovering new interests and developing your scuba diving ability. You will sample different specialities to see what interests you most. You will also dive deeper during the Advanced Course, between 18-30 metres (60-100ft) depending on your age.

Requirements

Prior to diving, all divers must complete a Dive Course Medical Questionnaire. In our commitment to the safety of our guests, divers over 45 years for PADI dive courses must have a medical clearance with a physician the confirms they are Fit To Dive. This can be provided by your own GP before you leave for your holiday. Please be aware that certain medical conditions (e.g. asthma, heart disease, diabetes) and/or prescription medication may prevent some people from diving.

In the interests of safety, we recommend no flying within 24hours of the last dive. You will not be allowed to dive until you are declared medically fit to dive. For advice please contact our office directly.

Minimum Experience

PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization).

Important diving information

Pre-requisites: Prior to diving, all divers must complete a Dive Course Medical Questionnaire.

Under Queensland law, entry-level (Open Water) divers over 45 years must provide a medical certificate by a doctor certifying that the person is medically fit to dive. This can be provided by your own GP or a local GP. Please be aware that certain medical conditions (e.g. asthma, heart disease, diabetes), a high BMI and/or prescription medication may prevent some people from diving. Please complete the Dive Course Medical Questionnaire ahead of time to understand better your medical requirements for completing this course.
